Operating levy referendums fund the day-to-day operations of the district (teacher and staff salaries and benefits, supplies, utilities, curriculum, transportation, co-curriculars). Operating levies must be approved by voters.
Referendum funding has been part of the school funding mix in Minnesota as long as the school district has existed. It allows local communities to provide funding for their local schools based on local priorities.
General Fund Expenses
The question on the ballot invites voters to consider increasing our district’s general education revenue by $834.85 per pupil for a 10-year term, incorporating an inflationary factor. Based on our enrollment projections, this new levy would generate approximately $500,000 in additional funding for the first year, with an inflation adjustment for years 2-10.
The School Board is responsible for balancing the budget. If the referendum does not pass, they will have to find ways to reduce expenses and/or bring in additional revenue. These are examples of potential areas that may be considered:
- The number of students per class may increase.
- Classroom support positions may be eliminated.
- Programs may be eliminated.
- Bussing routes may have to change.
- Additional fees may need to be implemented.
The following informational meetings will be held. We invite our community members to attend a meeting to learn more about the needs within the district.
